Today I thought I would write on how much sleep we really need, as this can get quite confusing.

An article on Elemental wrote that the percentage of people who do, according to the latest federal data:

Numbers don’t tell the wholestory, though. Each person’s sleep needs vary significantly based on a few factors, including age and genetics. One thing we do know for sure is that too little sleep is really bad for you.

“Healthy sleep is as important as proper nutrition and regular exercise for our health and well-being, and sleep is critical for performance and safety,”saysKannan Ramar, MD, president of the Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Adults who sleep less than six hours a night are 13% more likely to die before their time, compared with those who sleep seven to nine hours.

MAJOR RESEARCH PROJECT TO STUDY CHRONIC PAIN…

An article on the website of The University of Bristol said chronic pain is a major global public health challenge that causes significant disability. A new research consortium and national chronic pain data hub could improve outcomes for the many people living with painful and debilitating conditions, such as fibromyalgia, lower back pain, headaches and migraines, thanks to a joint £14 million grant from UKRI and Versus Arthritis.

he consortium and hub is a joint and equal investment fromUKRIandVersus Arthritis. For UKRI, the initiative is led by theMedical Research Council, with support from theBiotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council(BBSRC) andEconomic and Social Research Council(ESRC).

FIBROMYALGIA MAY BE AN AUTO IMMUNE DISORDER…

The Guardian and World Health recently wrote articles on new research about Fibromyalgia which may be caused by be an autoimmune response that increases the activity of pain-sensing nerves throughout the body.

The findings, published in theJournal of Clinical Investigation, challenge the widely held view that the condition originates in the brain, and could pave the way for more effective treatments for the millions of people affected.

They could also have implications for patients suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and “long Covid”. “These different syndromes are symptomatically very similar, so I think it could be very relevant to both of these conditions,” said Dr David Andersson from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London, who led the new study. Could there be a miracle jab for back pain agony? Wow, how amazing would that be!!

According to an article in The Mail onSunday (June 20th 2021) by Jonathan Neal and Ethan Ennals there is a pain relieving jab available to back pain sufferers.

They explain that people with severe back pain are set to be given a new drug that can halt the disease in its tracks and protect us from permanent spine damage.

The drug, secukinumab, is designed to treat spondyloarthritis, an umbrella term for a number of conditions in which the immune system, for unknown reasons, turns inwards and attacks health spinal joints.

Pain in the buttoks area is often initially misdiagnosed as sciatica, a condition caused by compressed nerves in the lower back. In about half of cases, non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis progresses to ankylosing spondylitis.
